Mudslide closed road from Atkinson Flats

I've had lots of people ask me about when they can get up here into the trails and camping so figured it would be easier this way to tell you what's happening during the melt-out.

These photos are the narrow bridge just north of the 2nd snow gate , just N of Atkinson Flats CG. Because of heavy rains in Jan this yr on top of fresh POW the water cut many new channels and several cut across the road and down the other side, this is almost 400 yds long
N->S and a real mess. These photos were taken 2 weeks ago and there was still snow under the dirt and mud. The owner's step son climbed the hill and diverted the water back into the creek just after these
photos were taken instead of running across and along the road under the snow the heaviest flow is on the wrong side of the road and cut an 18"x 48 trough at the bridge and a long the road, just not as deep.

We've contacted the FS road manager and were told it would be late June before anything would be done to repair, but they have no money and could possibly close the road for the season. I've been talking to some friends with equipment, or if I can get a Bobcat can at least make it passable but it will still be another couple of weeks before even the first gate will be opened because of the amount of snow still on the road N of Fenner CK the first CG after the pavement ends co currently both gates are
locked to keep people from getting stuck or having the road destroyed.

For all of you hiker's and campers who enjoy coming up this direction because of the great hiking and camping places might want to contact the Leavenworth office of Wenatchee Forest and tell them how important being able to access the areas past Atkinson Flats is to you, and ask when the road might be opened, their attitude is it's not accessed that often and might not be worth opening up...just a thought.

I'll keep this information coming to show progress or lack of it and whether or not you can get to your favorite spot in the mountains...

Happy Memorial Day Y'all Peace

Winter isn't over just yet...

After the last couple of weeks being pretty wet and warm it finally got a little cooler and yesterday it snowed all day but no real accumulation because of rain in the middle of it, we woke up this morning to 7" of new POW, covering everything all the trees and filling in the holes and tracks that had become prominent with the warmer wetter days...So don't put those sleds and skis away just yet, winter is still trying to hang on a little longer, get out and enjoy it...Peace

5" of Almost Pow

Good Morning it's 31 degrees and we did get 5" of sorta Pow, not so dry you can't make a snowball because you can but not as sopping wet as last weekend when you were pushing more snow that you were leaving behind, very wet and sloppy.  If anyone is heading out towards Trinity today I sure could use some 1/2n1/2 and a pack of cigs Camel or Winston, I'll gladly pay you when you get here...Everything looks so much prettier today that it did yesterday after all the snow fell off the trees, at least it's back...Get out and enjoy it and the snow should be fairly stable but be safe if riding in unfamiliar areas...It is punchy in places... As always Chocolate ice cream is always appreciated...Peace

7" of Wet Snow in last 2 days

It seem like we have gotten ourselves in a convergence zone here with nights staying between 32- 34 and days warming up to almost 40, the snow turns to rain and makes things punchy and sloppy, not much fun to have to go anywhere in for sure...with all of the wet snow it's packing it down and we are at 104" at the sno-tel site and looks like it been knocked offline also...gonna have to make my way up there and see what is happening probably wet snow on the antenna which has been playing havoc here with the satellite also, the dish can handle over a 1 of POW and still function but it only takes about .25" of slush or frozen ice to block off the satellite dish which has been happening lots lately...Be careful out there and do the snow dance we don't need anymore rain...Peace

1" of Snow...

Well it's snowing now and snowed most of the day yesterday but only 1" accumulated where I measure anyway but it could be a couple more it's just sorta wet but still snowing now.  The road has been used and there is a trail that it seems most stay in making walls on the sides which is actually where it is smoother to ride, they have not yet groomed and I heard that they might be done for the season, but I haven't officially heard that from the groomers yet.  If anyone is going riding today out this direction I could use some 1/2n1/2 and any mail that might be at Midway, but if not no biggy and can't say I'd blame anyone...Just be safe out there as this is still some unstable snow, know where you are playing...Peace

2" of Wetter Snow

Well it's 32 degrees and we got a whopping 2" of wetter snow since yesterday, it is helping the snow to compact somewhat  but then again it's a little punchy in places...Not much to report other than to be safe out there as we're seeing some slide activity close by so don't take conditions for granted especially in the back country areas, check  conditions before trying something new always better to be safe than sorry...Peace

25" since Tues, mostly wet Snow

Sorry everyone having some technical difficulties lately but since Tues morning we have gotten 25" total snow but since yesterday morning around 11am it started turning wetter snow with some rain mixed in but then it started snowing again about 4pm yesterday but that was rather wet also...It did get down to 28 last night but the daytime temps up into the 40's haven't helped alot but the snow is settling down some, gt out and enjoy it but be careful and aware of what the snow is like where you choose to play...Peace

6" of Wetter Snow

Good Morning it's 29 degrees and snowing lightly, we had 6" of snow this morning but it is much wetter snow this morning that it has been lately being baby fine POW.  Yesterday afternoon we had about 8" of POW by 3pm but it got warm and the snow got wet compacting it quite a bit and by 5 pm it was compacted to about 3.5" and even with it snowing most of the night we only got 6" this morning.  This and the warmer daytime temps up to 41 each day will help the snow to consolidate and compact which will stabilize it making it somewhat safer but still be aware of the snow conditions where you choose to play...Get out and enjoy this wonderful whiteness there is something for everyone...Peace

8" of POW and Puking Snow

Good Morning it's 26 degrees & 8" this morning and still puking snow...  After a beautiful bluebird weekend with great friends playing , and getting stuck in the POW,  the snow settled some and days up to the low 40's since Sat helped to greatly settle things down after getting an average of 1' of POW per day since last Sun morning early. The snow has settled to 89"as of yesterday but with the new snow today we're back to 98" but that will settle today.  Get out and enjoy it while it's here but also be aware of your surroundings as it's still possible to cause slide and big fractures...Don't take anything for granted...Peace

8" of POW

Good Morning it's 26 degrees and we got another 8" of POW this morning, light, fluffy, and very deep POW...We did hear some sleds come out yesterday and as they were coming hard you could tell the bottom dropped out and it went blaaa, "Oh shit" was what I could hear.  The dogs weren't happy in that the snow is too deep to go out for them right now, yet the martens' just scamper across the light fluffy snow with ease...Blue skies overhead with a few clouds, get out and enjoy the POW but be safe it is very unstable snow still and over 6' has fallen since Sun am...Peace

Clearer Skies Today 7" POW

Good Morning it's 12 degrees and we got another 7" of wetter snow but the temp dried it out, this morning skies are clearer with a few clouds looks like it could be  a beautiful day.  The snow is rather bottomless here even places packed down 2 days ago are softening up  so get out and enjoy it but know the snow is very unstable right now so use caution in upper elevations.  Check it out before just jumping into areas your not familiar with.  The groomers are not coming up this way until this system is over and the slides have done their thing probably next week, I'll keep ya updated... Peace

7" POW Over 5' this Week

Good Morning another snowy 26 degree morning and another 7" on the ground and since Sun  a total of 5' has fallen here, but it starting to settle somewhat, you can still end up in chest deep POW if now careful, trust me, not fun...At this time I've been told the groomer is holding off grooming out this way until the snow stops and any slides that might happen have come down which could be next week.  I've not seen a single sledder since early Sunday morning when it was snowing and getting heavier as the day progressed.  Be careful out there  this is very unstable snow right now as I've heard one more slide happen up valley yesterday.  Be safe and enjoy the POW but know where you are going and check the snow before playing hard, if might just save your life...Peace

13" More POW the Dancing Worked

Good Morning it's 29 degrees and we got another 13" of snow since yesterday and since Sunday morning we've received 53" here in Paradise but it is settling some, so be careful ot there very punchy...Yesterday while going to clear the dish heard 2 pretty good slides up valley...Not sure when the groomer will run this week holding off I believe to see what this system does and let any slides come on down first, so be aware there is very deep POW out there and slides are likely in areas prone to slides...Peace

The POW is Here 34" this Morning

Well after not much to speak of for the last month until this past week we were at 4' of snow, but that has all changed we got 34" this morning @ 27 degrees...It's fluffy and deeeep so get out and enjoy it but be safe at least this is what we wanted just didn't expect it in one 24 hour period...Think we'll be staying in since to go anywhere means trudging through waist deep snow and as long as I can still connect to the internet right now inside is looking good...Be safe out there today...Peace

2" of New snow and still snowing

Good Morning it's 27 degrees and snowing and this morning we had 2" of new snow...Last night the clouds cleared away enough for the snow to glisten and brighten up the valley enough to see the mountains all around and we still have 2 days til full moon now if it will just clear each night, but we do need the snow...Get out and enjoy it while it's here...Peace

White Trees once again 8" of Snow

It seems as if it's been forever since we really have any real snow to speak of but since yesterday we've gotten 8" of snow some of it wet some of it drier...but at least it's snow...Keep those dancing boots on as we still could use a nice big dump since we are just at about 58" in the middle of Feb and that's not a good thing.  Get out and enjoy it if you can...Peace

Whoop whoop 3" of Snow finally

Well after almost a month of nothing but warmer temps and several inches of rain we woke up this morning to 3" of wet snow, all the trees are tipped in white and it looks beautiful with all the dirty snow now perfectly white and clean once again...We are currently holding around 50" of snow-pack left which is nothing for this time of year and why we need some more, like all the snow that passed us and headed East the last couple of weeks...
The last couple of years this seems to be the pattern the east coast gets our snow, they cry because they are getting hammered and have no idea what to do with it while those of us who live for snow watch our snow disappear turning to springtime conditions during the middle of winter...not a good thing at all...Keep dancing get those snow-boots white, hit the drums harder and lets turn this rain back into snow to enjoy the next couple of months...Peace

FINALLY it's Snowing Again

There is only about 1/2" of fresh snow right now but it is still snowing and normally I would be very happy seeing that, unfortunately it's 34 degrees and with a freshly groomed trail yesterday this fresh snow will make it nice riding at least...After not getting but 2 " of snow the past 3 weeks and what snow we did get never made it very long and was melted before the next days snow report.  It's nice to see but not sure how long it will stick around and after such warming trends going on lately which has only made it sloppy I'm not sure how to react, so gonna keep on dancing...Get out and enjoy it while it's here as it might not be here too long...Peace

Another 15" of POW

Good Morning it's 33 degrees and we got another 15" of POW since yesterday morning and still coming down...We now have almost 7' on our gauge in back and 6.5' up at the sno-tel site up above here.  Temps are warmer but the snow is still fairly dry and very fluffy and what base had formed is now soft again and you can punch through if not careful, not the best snow for snowshoes at all...This is supposed to continue today and tonight and possibly turn to rain tomorrow through Friday but being where we are anything is possible as we've seen over and over...Lots of snow sliding off the roofs forming the snow caves once again...Get out and enjoy the POW but be safe out there...Peace

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

15" of POW and chilly temps

Good Morning it's 17 degrees and we got 15" of new POW, very light and dry POW...IT's snowing hard yet it's very fine snow...Let see what today brings supposed to continue snowing all day...might be a big dump, so get those snow clothes out and on and enjoy the snow, it does a body good...Peace

Finally some snow sorta

Good Morning it's 29 degrees and we got just a tad over 1" of wet snow with a little freezing rain crust which should help settle it a little more...The road to Trinity was just groomed and in great shape up this direction but wet and rainy down new Atkinson flats...We should be getting more snow after tomorrow and through the weekend with cooler temps once again...If anyone is planning to ride up this way I have a favor to ask before you do...email me @ trinity5.peace@yahoo.com or reply in comments please...Peace
